Journals such as NATURE REVIEWS have their own illustrators to ensure a consistent style for all illustrations in the published version. For a smooth review process of a manuscript, however, it is still worth commissioning professional illustrations. After all, nobody wants to run the risk of unnecessarily upsetting their reviewers with poor illustrations.
